Overview:
San Diego Black Pride, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, is the heart of our LGBTQ Black community. We are here to connect you to resources, events, and outlets that support and enrich your life, fostering a sense of unity and togetherness that strengthens the community we all call home.
To benefit Black LGBTQ individuals and families, the SDBP organizes unique events and programming that align with our vision of becoming a "strong, sustainable, and connected" community. One of our annual events is our conference, a vibrant gathering of Black, Queer culture. Distinctively themed each year, the conference is both a reflection and a celebration of our lives, challenges, and transformation. Our social mixers, primarily our annual Pride event, seasonal events, and programs, help create spaces for the community to gather, connect, and exist wholly. In contrast, our community outreach events allow us to engage with the larger San Diego community.
Description of Award:
The award provides financial support to members of the Black LGBTQ community who excel in academics. The scholarship is named after our first official President, Damon J. Shearer. Damon J. Shearer, a passionate educator, that spent years guiding the SD Black LGBTQ Coalition [now San Diego Black Pride} and worked to strengthen our Black LGBTQ community.
Two selected winners will receive a $5,000 scholarship.
Eligibility:
Eligibility requirements for the scholarship:
Currently a high school senior attending college in the 2024/25 academic year or a college student currently enrolled in a program, and identify as LGBTQ, being or identifying as Black or part of the African Diaspora and have at least a 2.5 unweighted cumulative GPA or a 3.4 weighted cumulative GPA.
You must also be a current resident of the San Diego area. Awards are based on financial need, your scholarship application essay, and past academic performance. We will consider applications that don’t meet the GPA threshold with a supplemental explanation.
Application Process:
Incomplete applications will not be considered.
Submit the form below, a 500 word essay (details below), academic transcripts from current college/university, picture /w your ID and a 2-4 minute video.
The video should explain why you should be selected for the scholarship and your goals to empower/help the Black LGBTQ community. The video needs to be no less than 2 minutes and no longer than 4 minutes.
Deadlines:
All applications are due by July 29, 2024. You will be notified of your application status by August 12, 2024.

You consent to providing necessary information for competitive scholarship selection and certify that you meet the aforementioned qualifications to be considered for the scholarship.
*You must also attend a mandatory financial literacy workshop before receiving the funds.
You understand and consent to the San Diego Black Pride obtaining confirmation regarding your school enrollment, Grade Point Average/Grades, and/or income verification. San Black Pride will keep the information confidential and it will only be used for consideration of your application.
You consent to the publishing of related information on social media if selected as a recipient.
You affirm and certify that all the information and answers to questions herein are complete, true and correct to the best of your knowledge and belief. You understand that any misrepresentation, falsification, or omission of any facts called for in the application may render this application void and will be cause for disqualification, whenever discovered.
By submitting an application for our scholarship, you simultaneously acknowledge and agree to these terms and conditions.
Thank you for submitting! Only complete applications will be received and reviewed. You will be notified by email of the Scholarship Committee's decision no later than August 5, 2024. School enrollment will need to be verified before receiving scholarship funds.
